Overview of Activity

Rationale and overall goal for the activity:

Student sonographers and on-the-job trained sonographers generally do not have access to formal training in infection control procedures related to probe covers, transducer cleaning and sterilization and related topics. In telephone interviews with ultrasound program directors across the nation it emerged that the majority of the programs provided no formal training in how to select, use, and dispose of probe covers. Consistently the program directors stated that they relied on the clinical sites to provide this training. However, clinical sites often do not have time or the inclination to provide training in infection control procedures to students. This educational presentation is intended to help fill in this “gap” in training. The objective of this activity is to provide the entry level sonographer and the student sonographer with basic information on use of probe covers for infection control.

Learning Objectives

After viewing this learning activity the participant will be able to

1. Discuss the role of probe covers in infection control

2. Describe the proper method for placing a probe cover on a transducer

3. Describe the procedure for disinfection of transducer
